This has been the most important project in my two-year career. As the product owner and UX designer, I deeply participated in the whole process of design and productization. My design thinking and project management skills have been improved tremendously.
Project Background
Only Benz S-class & VW Id.4 have AR-HUD with actual AR ability in the market
First AR-HUD of Huawei without similar experience to follow
From 0 to 1, involving a large amount of cross-department and cross-professional cooperation
Ideal Goals
The display info is deeply integrated with the actual traffic conditions seen by the driver
Effectively prevent missing the the correct turns, and timely remind dangerous situations during driving
Prevent the driver from frequently looking down to check the cluster and center display to improve driving safety
Main Functions
Use the front windshield as the projection medium to reflect into a virtual image
Integrate AR navigation and ADAS info with the road conditions ahead
Intuitively visualize navigation indication, obstacle warning, lane departure, blind spot monitoring, etc.
Challenges
Mechanical: FOV is too small, imaging can only cover a small part of the real world which limits the AR capability
Rendering: has to be compatible with various data/platforms to conduct real-time correction and ensure the matching between AR and real world
Navigation ability: it is difficult to combine navigation data and road structure on non-closed roads, which is difficult for AR navigation
Data: camera, navigation and ADAS data have high delay and low accuracy
